Manager, Business Development Technology

The Role:

As the Manager, Business Development Technology at Bennett Jones, you will enable, optimize and accelerate our business development technology ecosystem and capabilities, while driving desired business and user experience outcomes. This individual will:

  • set and oversee the roadmap for the continued development of the firm's CRM platform (currently InterAction) and experience database (currently Foundation), including the application of AI or other complementary technologies;
  • determine firm and user needs in relation to strategic business development objectives, and provide and execute recommendations for continued optimization of these and other related technologies to meet those needs; and
  • provide guidance and develop partnerships across the firm, including within Client & Business Development, IT, Finance and among lawyers and legal assistants to ensure the systems, processes and data flows are efficient and effective.

This individual is a super-user of and evangelist for these technologies within the firm and a key member of our Client & Business Development team. Other responsibilities in this portfolio will include vendor management, development and enhancement of training programs, supporting communications plans and managing the tasks and performance of a team administering the data in these systems. Reporting to the Director, Business Development Technology & Operations, you will leverage your business development, technology, analytical, change management and project management skills to assist the firm in reporting on and executing strategic initiatives across all offices.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the effectiveness, management, analysis, testing and maintenance of client relationship management (CRM) system and experience database/ proposal tool (Foundation)
  • Develop, gain consensus for and execute a plan for the continued improvement of our CRM and experience management platforms, including smart integrations, enhanced taxonomies, tagging and data collection processes, and maximizing the firm’s use of existing features
  • Working with IT and selected stakeholders, develop the business requirements and recommendations for the future state of our CRM platform, including evaluation of competing technologies, and participate in the development, communication and execution of resulting project plans to achieve the firm’s objectives
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert to optimize the firm’s current operations technology and evaluate and recommend innovative ways technology can improve the firm’s business development function and enhance our operations and reputation
  • Oversee firmwide training, rollout and adoption of new processes related to Foundation and InterAction, communicate best practices, and ensure all processes and reference materials are maintained
  • Develop and deepen relationships with key stakeholders and contributors, including lawyers and legal assistants, IT, Finance, Pricing, HR and colleagues within Client & Business Development, bringing these resources to bear on priority projects
  • Work closely with internal teams, stakeholders and vendors to ensure high quality data and produce dynamic and insightful reports and dashboards
  • Supporting the Director of BD Operations on strategic planning and vendor management
  • Contribute to special technology projects and strategic initiatives with senior leadership

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years’ experience working with marketing and business development technology platforms, with proven success in developing and implementing CRM strategies, and/or defining and overseeing organization-wide technology rollouts and enhancements
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Information Technology, Data Analytics or related field
  • Knowledge of database management, data analytics, CRM (InterAction an asset), experience management, proposal generators, PowerBI and other related technologies and platforms. Experience with these technologies in the legal or professional services industry is a plus
  • Previous experience in managing a team and/or coordinating multiple projects across various teams
  • Strong writer, communicator and client service orientation
  • Ability to influence without authority by presenting reasoned recommendations and realistic paths for achievement of those objectives
  • Proactive, self-starter and a team player, with strong analytical skills, confident working in collaboration with various stakeholders
  • Reading, writing and speaking French is a bonus
