Grant Stapon is the co-head of the wills & estates litigation group in the firm's Calgary office and is the former head of the commercial litigation group. He acts for energy companies, insurance companies, media organizations, tech companies, individual executives and the Calgary Police Service.

Grant is experienced in corporate/commercial, intellectual property, securities, media, oil and gas, insurance, environmental, occupational health and safety litigation and arbitration. He also has an employment and labour law practice. Grant advises several public company boards on governance issues, and has appeared before various boards, courts and tribunals in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland.

In addition to his corporate litigation practice, Grant has been defence counsel in many of the largest environmental cases in Alberta including the Little Buffalo Kemp spill, the Red Deer River Gleniffer Lake spill, the Seal Condensate spill, the OBED dam failure, the Medicine Hat / Suffield migratory birds case, as well as several other significant environmental cases still under investigation or in trial proceedings.

Grant has been external counsel to the Calgary Police Service for over 35 years having advised 7 Chiefs of Police, several of whom have remained his clients after their retirement.

Grant has over 100 reported decisions from various courts and tribunals. He sits on several corporate boards and he has lectured and written on the law frequently. He is also a member of various community and charitable organizations.

IFP Technologies (Canada) Inc. ("IFP"), in the $60-million law suit of the predecessors to Ovintiv Canada ULC and Cenovus Energy (collectively, "Ovintiv") based on the alleged improper development of the Eyehill Creek oil field and failure to observe IFP’s contractual rights to refuse a disposition to a third party
EnCana Corporation, which had an enterprise value of approximately US$50 billion, in its division into two independent publicly traded companies - one new EnCana Corporation, an unconventional natural gas company and the other Cenovus Energy Inc. an integrated oil company
Acted for successful party in a multi-million-dollar expedited arbitration involving a significant recreational resort property in the interior of British Columbia with the arbitration involving a consideration of construction delay claims as well as First Nations issues
Acted for the Personal Representatives of the Estate of Mr. Phillips, in a contest over the ownership of shares of the estate, related legal costs, and enforcement measures. Phillips v. Phillips, 2005 ABQB 556
Acted for the respondent personal representative of the estate in an appeal before the Alberta Court of Appeal challenging the trial judge's decision regarding the ownership of corporate shares of the estate
Apache Canada Ltd., in a complex litigation matter involving a number of working interest owners and a freehold mineral lessor
Renfrew Thompson Insurance Limited, as general litigation counsel
Sears Canada Inc., as general Alberta litigation counsel
Sears Canada Limited, in successfully coordinating and managing remediation and resolution of claims involving leaking gasoline from a Calgary service station affecting approximately 25 residences
Shoppers Drug Mart, as general Alberta litigation counsel
Stone Creek Properties Inc., in successfully concluding dispute resolution process with respect to development initiatives of Stone Creek Properties Inc.'s development rights on Kinbasket Indian Reserve lands
Gibson Energy Inc., as general litigation counsel
ICE, in obtaining an Anton Pillar private search warrant resulting in the prosecution, conviction, and deportation of a U.S. immigration officer and pending criminal prosecution of those with whom he dealt
Linda J. Court, acting on behalf of local resident and, successfully judicially reviewing a decision of the Alberta Environment permitting the construction of a gravel pit south of Calgary causing a re-hearing on various environmental issues
Paramount Resources Limited, in successfully resolving an arbitration between Paramount Resources Limited and Elizabeth Metis Settlement with respect to land access and lease payments to land governed by the Metis Settlement Act
The Banff Television Festival Foundation, in its restructuring involving incorporating a new foundation and obtained a court ordered transfer of assets and goodwill permitting the 2004 Banff Television Festival to proceed. This transaction included the licensing of various intellectual property assets to a third party white knight to ensure this 25 year Alberta institution could continue forward with its goals
