Steven Major, K.C. is a litigation partner at Bennett Jones, representing individuals, corporations, and other entities on a broad array of matters including commercial and contractual disputes, real and personal property, energy law, constitutional law, civil fraud recovery, and quasi-criminal/regulatory defence work. Steve is also a proud member of the Bennett Jones Energy Services group. He was awarded with a Queen's Counsel (now King's Counsel) designation in the Spring of 2022 and was also an honoured recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (Alberta) in December 2022 in recognition of his extensive community service.
Steve is a Past President of the Calgary Bar Association and an active member of the Canadian Bar Association. Steve has appeared before several administrative tribunals and all levels of courts in Alberta including the Alberta Court of Appeal. Prior to joining the firm, he clerked at both the Court of Appeal and Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta for the former Chief Justice, the Honourable W.K. Moore.
Steve is a strong advocate over the past decade for the Canadian Energy Industry, having been a speaker and moderator at a number of engagements including the Canadian Energy Executive Association’s (“CEEA”) Executive Business Forums, Queen’s University’s Global Energy Conferences, Murray Athol College of Notre Dame Energy Conference, Indian Resource Council’s Infrastructure Conference, and National Coalition of Chiefs’ Energy Summit, among others. In the Spring of 2020, Steve led a (successful) effort to advocate against a proposal Queen's University's Board of Trustees were considering to divest Queen's endowment away from Canadian Energy equities. In May 2020, Steve also authored the Opposition Article in the "National" Canadian Bar Association's monthly magazine to the "Climate Justice Resolution" (which had been proposed to the CBA by one of its members) and successfully opposed that motion at the 2021 Annual General Meeting as the leading speaker against it.
Steve is deeply connected in the Western Canadian business community. Along with his wife, they are active Past Chairs of CEEA, and he is the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the annual Calgary Flames Ambassadors' Charity Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament (which has raised over $7 Million in 18 years). Steve was also a 20-year volunteer with the Calgary Stampede, having chaired its Western Legacy Awards Committee and more recently chairing its Innovation Committee.
Steve is an avid golfer, enjoys the odd acting gig, and occasionally writes opinion pieces for the local newspapers.
